Systemic Thinking:

Hypnosis:

Developmental Dynamics:

Hypnosis: Development of Hypnosis, from another Point of View

Hi,

Whenever when we talk about the development of hypnosis, we refer to her history. It is all about sleeping temples in ancient Greece, India and Egypt, Mesmerism of Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer, then Dr. Elliotson, Dr. Braid, Coue, Freud, and Dr. Erickson etc.

I do not plan to go through the whole history again as you can find it in many books. I am going to discuss with you from another point of view, the 3 paradigm shifts in the long history of hypnosis.

Some might aware of these shifts, most not.

In the early days, hypnotists help clients by giving suggestions to resolve clients' personal problems. This is the Personal Stage of Hypnosis Development. Provided that the causes of the problem is within the personal spectrum, suggestions can be very adequate.

Then, one of the greatest genius in the psychology field, Freud discovered that clients talking about their unresolved issues in the past, especially during their early childhood. Some of his clients were "cured" afterward. This is the very beginning of the Pre-Personal Stage.

The Pre-Personal Stage was further enhanced by the invention of many new skills decades after Freud. The most significant skill of this stage is Age Regression. This is the "upgraded" version of Freud's technique. But Age Regression is not the only or even the most effective skill of this stage.

Quite many of our fellow hypnotists using only Age Regression find difficulties in resolving clients' problems as Age Regression can only be effective for problems of certain sources. It is like just having one single tool to build a house. That's why I am teaching systems of various skills in our programs. Any skill which cater for the earliest Source of the problem is in this Pre-Personal Stage of Hypnosis.

The Trans-Personal Stage began when smart hypnotists realized that people under trance can be aware of some other information, ideas and memories that are not readily be noticed when awake. They transcend their normal awareness in hypnotic state. This extra information helps them to understand their problems and situation better which leads to possible resolution.

This transcendence in awareness makes Insights Hypnotherapy possible, or the usefulness of hypnosis is restricted to just an effective means of convincing people to unbelieve their old problematic mental programs (Personal Stage), or a powerful way to recall painful memories for re-justification (Pre-Personal Stage).

The ability of mastering skills of these 3 stages governs the effectiveness of a hypnotherapist's intervention.

Hypnosis:

內在溝通,『內在』在於溝通的對象為內心的次人格 (Sub-Personalities),亦即是你心中他人的想法,透徹的溝通讓你解開與別人之間的心結;
內在指導,『內在』由於不是向外尋求指導,而是詢問隱藏於自己潛意識中的資訊,自行瞭解問題,自行解決問題;
內在調解,『內在』基於是在整合自己心內的對立想法及信念,從而解除內心矛盾;

Part 2

Hi,

Keith

Part 1

Hi,

My Point of View: Quae sursum volo videre

Hi,

I wish to see what's beyond!

Keith
Explore, Exceed & Excel

Hypnosis: SOBER

SOBER System

SOBER System

Thinking:

堅持=+
不要=-

取消 = -
不要 = -

放棄 = -
不要 = -

應該= +
要= +
放棄= -
堅持= +
不要= -
堅持= +
放棄= -

Hypnosis:

Hypnosis:

Hi,

SOBER Therapy

Part 2

Hi,

(Disagreement)
(Unwillingness)

Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 8 - Factors for Results

Hi,

This is my newest update to the Hypnosis is about Changes Series. I had completed this series for almost 2 years. This is some additional information to my original system.

Hypnosis is about Changes is actually a systemic system. I teach the basic version in my Certified Hypnotherapist Program and the advanced version in the Master Hypnotherapist Program. This system gives you ideas on where one can intervene within and without the clients' system of problems.

The original formula (or system) is something like this:

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms/Factors > Results

But something is missed from it. There are Factors fostering the appearance of Problems & Symptoms. There can also be Factors for the element of Results.

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms/Factors > Results/Factors

Using our original example, our client wants to have a girl-friend, but his face always turns red in front of girls. If everything done is not successful or if interventions at other elements are not favourable to the clients, we simply shift the Results of the whole system. He can make friends with girls even his face is still red in front of them!

If he can think and speak clearly with a red face, his problem is "solved". This is the new Result we want to install. I had mentioned this in Part 6 and I am not going further into it here.

There must be something that can help him think and speak clearly in front of a girl. These are the Factors for the Results. It can be his ability to dissociate, or a feeling of calmness.

All these factors can be identified by using Inner Guidance, Inner Healer, Uncovering Techniques or the E.S. Therapy. Then we can install them by Suggestions.

To make working on Results effective, don't just install the Results, add as many Factors as possible!

Hypnosis:

Hypnosis:

1. Methods and Uses of Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis, by Bernard Hollander.

2. The Patterns of Hypnotic Techniques of Milton Erickson Book 1 & 2, by Richard Bandler & John Grinder.

NLP: Magic of NLP Demystified, by Byron Lewis & Frank Pucelik.

Coaching: The Inner Game of Tennis, by Timothy Gallwey.

Hypnosis:

Hypnosis:

Concepts Behind My Programs: Advanced Hypnotic Suggestions and AWARE Therapy

Hi,

Advanced Hypnotic Suggestions and AWARE Therapy is the Module 6 of our Certified Hypnotherapist Program.

In the module, we discuss how to enhance both the Acceptance and Power of hypnotic Suggestions. We also talk about the 25 skill-lets of the AWARE Therapy, which make people more aware of the possibilities about their situation so that they can gain more understanding from our SOBER Hypnotherapeautic Skills (e.g. Inner Regression, Inner Communication, etc) or in everyday life.

The core concepts behind this module are:

1. Become a person of Options, Not Procedure. If we see everything is Procedure, we will be stuck so easily as if we can't get through one single step in a Procedure, we are stuck.

2. Hypnotherapy is all about Reducing Resistance. If there is no resistance, even only one suggestion is given to the clients, your session will be effective. Any resistance might make that suggestion, or all of your suggestions, or your session, or even yourself being rejected by the clients.

3. Leading is the Core Cause of Resistance. You can never know whether your leading ideas will or will not be rejected by one's subconscious mind, even he/she agrees with it before induction. Your conscious mind and your subconscious mind can have different opinion. This is again one of the major causes of clients' problems - His/her conscious mind wants to change but his/her subconscious mind refuses to do so.

4. Contentless Questioning Promotes Awareness. Stuck is due to not able to be aware of the situation. Questioning helps. But if your question is full of Content, the Content hinders one's awareness. AWARE Therapy is the art of asking Contentless questions to unstuck.

5. Hypnotic Induction is just Facilitating a Change of State. No matter what kind of induction skills you are using, it follows the same principle behind. You create a inward focus and then a suggestion of change of state. You can design your own induction skill by simply following the formula taught in class.

Hypnosis:

Hypnosis:

Concepts Behind My Programs: Holistic Hypnotherapy & Trance-Formation

Hi,

Holistic Hypnotherapy & Trance-Formation is one of the modules of the Certified Hypnotherapist Program.

Its very core idea is seeing more to see what something really is. Behind this program, there are 3 concepts:

1. Whole is more than Parts. Once you realize such, this opens up so many more locations to intervene. This in turn creates Choices and thus Flexibility.

2. Everything exists with a Purpose. When the Purpose changes, it changed. When the Purpose does not need to exist, it vanished.

3. When one knows what Trance really is, one do not need Induction to induce Trance. When one know what something really is, one do not need the "Proper" Procedure!

Concepts 101 Part 9: Discovery & Influence

Hi,

Nearly all my teachings about NLP, Hypnosis, Coaching and Facilitation are revolving around a major concept of mine, Discovery & Influence.

They are the 2 far ends of the spectrum of communication. You cannot discover and influence at the same time as they are at the 2 extremes.

Coaching is at the far end of Discovery. We help others to discover without giving any directions and advice. It is a form of pure discovery. It is easy for the coach, but harder for the coachee.

Persuasion is on the other hand, at the far end of Influence. It is hard for the persuaders while easy for the one being persuaded.

From the NLP point of view, Discovery is helping people to recover the Deletions, Distortions and Generalizations in their thinking. Influence is purposefully deleting, distorting and generalizing the thinking of people so as they will agree with you.

Suggestions-based Hypnosis is a kind of Persuasion. We delete, distort and/or generalize clients' thinking. Facilitation is in between Discovery and Influence. We lead our clients to think using suitable structures so as to gain results faster and easier. Transformation Hypnotherapy (SOBER Therapy) is Facilitation, which is done under trance with the unconscious thinking.

Personal Development: NLP, Hypnosis, Coaching, Facilitation, Systemic Thinking and Influencing

Hi,

I teach quite a lot of stuff, mainly including NLP, Hypnosis, Coaching, Facilitation, Systemic Thinking and Influencing. They seem to be quite different but I am teaching the same thing, Self Awareness!

1. NLP is the gaining of awareness through realizing and minimizing the discrepancy of our External World (Reality) and Internal World (Perceptions). This results in a clearer and realistic thinking.

2. Hypnosis is about accumulating awareness by recognizing and re-understanding our beliefs that leaded to our problems. This results in solving of our problems.

3. Coaching is to enhance our awareness by exposing our assumptions and blind spots. This results in development.

4. Facilitation is the gaining of awareness using different frameworks and directions of thinking. This leads to faster and easier results.

5. Systemic Thinking is increasing our awareness through exploring beyond our usual system of thinking and to identify the connections between sub-systems. This results in seeing more, in form of both bigger pictures and details.

6. Influencing is attaining awareness by understanding human patterns of thinking. You can then persuade others according to their thinking patterns.

Hypnosis: Positive Messages Process

The Process of Positive Messages is very unique and core part of our system of SOBER Hypnotherapy. If you miss this process, you will make your therapy far, far less effective. You waste your and your client's time and effort.

As it is so important, I explained the process in more details in my recent SOBER Therapy Module of the Certified Hypnotherapist Program. Below is a brief summary of what I had explained that day.

It is not someone in the past or something happened in the past directly causes us problem now. It is the beliefs that developed out of that past event that cause us troubles. For example, you was so fear during a singing contest when you were 10. You unconsciously gained a belief of "public presentation is something horrible". So when you are now already 30, you fear much about speaking in front of people.

In our SOBER System, the Positive Messages Process is the consolidation process after you review your past event, relationship and beliefs during hypnosis. You gain new understanding after the review and you make your new understanding concrete through verbalizing them out. These concrete positive messages become your new beliefs. We can't just delete our old beliefs by not believing in something, but we can only replace the old beliefs with new ones. You believe in something else instead!

Positive Messages are not messages that are "positive" in general sense. It does not need to be optimistic, moral, ethical or even be good. It is not our job and we can't judge the content of our clients' new understanding. I am not saying that being optimistic, moral, ethical or good is not important. But we should not push our own judgement towards our clients!

To be positive, a message must meet the following 3 criteria:

1. Actionable. Or the client can't do anything about it to change his/her situation. Furthermore, without actions (thus without results), clients can't further solidify their new beliefs. (Remember our use of 即係?)

2. Safe. There is no potential danger (to the clients and others) in the message. (Remember our use of 因為?)

3. Without Limitation. The new beliefs are opening up possibilities for the clients, not further limiting them. In hypnosis, a problem is a limitation of client's thinking and actions. (Remember our use of 因為?)

When all 3 criteria are met, the new beliefs (and thus the new actions generated) could be more realistic!

NLP: The Missing Filter

Hi,

One core part of NLP is the study of Filters in distorting, deleting and generalizing our thinking. The NLP Filters include Value (i.e. what's important?), Belief (i.e. what's real?) and Rule (i.e. what's right?). These filters can make our thinking and thus our behaviours distant from reality!

So, verifying our filters is one of the major purposes of learning NLP. But one even more influential filter is missing, our Emotions.

When we are in a positive emotional state (e.g. happy, excited, love, etc.), we tend to assign positive values to people, things and happenings. We are in a more readily accepting mood, even something we consider not good to us. However, when we are in a negative emotional states (e.g. sad, angry, fear, etc.), we do the opposites.

This is so called the "Self Deception" researched by Prof. Paul Thagard of the University of Waterloo. We unconsciously distort, delete, and/or generalize the reality when under emotions. This is why the State of Knowing Nothing (in New Coded NLP) is so important in gaining maximum insights. When we know nothing, we are in a void emotional state!

This is also the purpose of Emotional Release when we are doing the Transformational Hypnotherapy Skills (i.e IR, IC, etc.). Only after the emotions are released, the effect of emotions on our thinking is reduced so that we can gain positive messages after the process.

Hypnosis: Free Association = Hypnosis?

Hi,

This is a question raised by one of our classmates. This is a great question and so I like to share it here.

Free Association is NOT Hypnosis! (or this will make Freud really mad, as he resisted hypnosis so much and we say that his own invention of Free Association is hypnosis!)

However, Free Association might lead to hypnotic state.

There can be at least 2 types of Free Association. The linear form that invented by Freud and the Radiant form that we use in Hypnotic Writing (it is taught in our Hypno-Communication Module of the NLP Practitioner Program)

In Freud's Free Association, the linear form of free association focuses people's attention. This focus of attention hypnotizes.

In Hypnotic Writing's Radiant form Free Association, one is "forced" to think of as many related words as possible. This "imagination", self-induced confusion, and fast shifting of attention causes hypnotic trance.

Free Association is not hypnosis, but you can easily find one in a hypnotic state when doing free association. (You can say Free Association can be a form of Induction!)

Then, why do I say "Free Association is not Hypnosis" while it can induce hypnotic state?

Because hypnosis also includes the element of "Establishment of a Selective Thinking" and that's Free Association does not do. This is the Establishment of Selective Thinking making hypnosis useful as this changes clients' thinking of his/her situation/problem.

It is just like you cannot say you being a hypnotist if what you learned is just induction. No matter how many kinds of induction you knew, you must also be able to establish Selective Thinking (eg. formulating Suggestions and/or gaining new learning using various kinds of hypnotic analysis, i.e. IR/IC/IG/AR/FT/ES...) to make yourself truly a hypnotist.

Hypnosis: How Can You Tell It is the ISE?

Hi,

When we are doing Inner or Age Regression, the most important factor governing its success or failure is whether the client is regressed back to his/her ISE, the Initial Sensitizing Event, i.e. the very first of his/her past experiences which lead to the problem.

How can we tell it is the ISE or not?

We have a lot of verification procedures to check. But even we check, we still cannot 100% ensure that it is the ISE!

However, all ISEs have a common characteristics. It must be related to a Primary Emotion. It can be Fear, Anger, Sadness and/or Disgust. When we could not handle the ISE at the time of happening, the emotion could then be further complicated with Subsequent Sensitizing Events (SSE) appearing. As a result, Secondary Emotions like boredom, annoyance, grief, remorse, jealousy are thus evolved.

The more serious and persisting problems usually have an ISE of Fear or Anger. Fear and Anger are the 2 emotions directly related to survival. This makes the problem so long-lasting. It is our basic instinct to survive. A persisting problem can be seen as a misunderstanding of threats to survival!

When you regress someone to ISE, check whether the emotion is primary or secondary. This saves the therapist's and the client's time and effort.

Hypnosis: Questions about Transformational Hypnotherapy

Hi,

Some participants of our Certified Hypnotherapist Program emailed me questions. These are good questions and I like to share with you:

1. Do we need to explain Inner Guide in Pre-Talk before doing so?

Yes. This is a selling process. The concept of Inner Guide can make some people feeling strange. It looks very "Mew Age", though it is not. We discussed Jung's theory on Archetypes in the same module because we can use Jung's Archetypes Concept to explain to our clients about Inner Guides.

2. Do we need to use the 『下次更深入暗示』every time we hypnotize a client? When do we put this suggestion?

Yes. We do it every time. It take us less than 10 seconds to say such suggestion but it can make the process easier for both the client and the therapist in the next session. Why not?

When to put the suggestion? Just use logic. When is the best time to tell someone it will be easier and faster to get to somewhere?

I give you 4 choices:
a. When you just arrive somewhere. (i.e. when you just complete the deepening process)
b. When you have already arrived somewhere for some times. (i.e. in the middle of the process after deepening)
c. When you are going to leave that somewhere. (i.e. before awakening)
d. When you have never go there. (i.e. before deepening/induction)

Choose you choice and email me your selection at ask@keithto.com. I will explain it further to you.

3. When I asked for name of the Inner Guide, he said that it was not necessary and he was always there. What can I do?

What is the aim to ask for the name? Easier to find the guide later! Then, ask him/her how the client can find him/her again in the future.

4. During Post-Hypnotic Suggestions, can we buy time by asking the client to repeat the positive messages or what he had learned by himself?

No. Why we repeat the suggestions? Because the clients are not having a very deep imprint of these newly learned beliefs inside their minds. We want to deepen the imprint by repeating.

If these beliefs are not deep, can the client repeat them by themselves? No. So, it is our job to repeat for the clients!

Hope you all get something from these Q & As.

Hypnosis: Back to the Future

Hi,

I watched the "Back to the Future 3" at HBO tonight. I love the series and I always mention them in my hypnotherapy classes. The following are my 3 insights learned from the movies that can be applied in hypnotic age regression:

1. Never change the history, you will never know what changes it will create in the future!

2. There is always a reason in the past to your current problem or success.

3. Sometimes, just a small change matters a lot.

Hypnosis: Leading Suggestions for the Process

Hi,

Do we use Leading Suggestions in hypnotherapy?

Many of you knows that I strongly disagree with the use of Leading Suggestions. This can mislead the clients, causing false memories and confusions. This harms more than helps!

However, if we do not use any leading suggestions, we simply cannot hypnotize anybody. Induction, deepening and all other hypnotic techniques are done through leading suggestions. For example, when you say, "As you close your eyes, you feel more relaxed", this statement is a leading suggestion.

We use lots of leading suggestions in the Process to guide our clients going through it, while we should not use any leading suggestion for the Content within the Hypnotic Process. For example, we will not suggest clients reviewing any particular experience or seeing any particular person during Age Regression. These are leading suggestions for the content.

But we will guide our clients using leading suggestion to the first time of having such feeling in Age Regression. This is the Process of Age Regression, not the Content.

Concepts 101 Part 5: Minimalism

Hi,

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features. The design is reduced to the only necessary elements.

I like to apply Minimalism to all of my works, particularly hypnotherapy and coaching. Only necessary elements are retained, all others are stripped down!

The world is already too complicated. If you want to work faster, easier but effectively, Minimalism might provide the solution.

Here are how I apply Minimalism in hypnotherapy and coaching:

1. Minimal Words. I deleted all unnecessary words. I use those proven-to-be-effective words again and again. This makes it easier for me and for the clients. They do not need to understand so many complex words and instructions. Artful using of very basic choices of words can be as effective.

2. Minimal Steps. I deleted all unnecessary steps. Many steps are just decoration or stuffing without any function. This results in briefer process and faster outcomes.

3. Minimal Interventions. I do not intervene because I want to intervene. I only do the necessary interventions. It will be less misleading and less works for me and for the clients.

4. Minimal Interpretations. I do not interpret what the clients said. I do not paraphrase. These just hinder the discovery process of the clients.

Hypnosis: Subtle Leading Suggestions

Hi,

We do not use leading suggestions in hypnotherapy to prevent potential dangers. If you want more information about Leading Suggestions, go here for another article.

There are some leading suggestions, which are very subtle. You even are not aware of them when you use them.

For example: When the clients in waking or hypnotic state telling you that "I am tired" and "I do not want to do my job". If you paraphrase it as "You are tired and so you do not want to do your job", then this becomes leading.

The word "so" creates a relationship between the 2 pieces of information. Such relationship is not mentioned by the client though the 2 pieces of information are. You are leading him/her into believing in something he/she might not believe before.

This can create complication which might make the process difficult or create side effects you never expected.

Hypnosis:

Hypnosis: 3 Elements of Effective Hypnotic Suggestions

Hi,

Hypnosis is about bringing about changes. Effective suggestions is one of the keys in bringing out the changes clients want.

To formulate effective suggestions, we must first understand why we do not change, even we know that the change is good to us. We want to quit this and that, we want to lose some weight, we want to speak in front of people, we want more confidence, we want to get better. All these are great things, but why we do not change? There can be 3 major reasons:

1. We do not know what to change!
2. We do not know why change!
3. We do not know how to change!

The first one is our goal or target. The second is our motivation and the third is the method. If we do not know either (or all) of these, we will not change.

Effective suggestion caters for all three's.

1. The Goal makes up the first part of the Main Suggestion
2. The Motivation is the second part of the Main Suggestion
3. The Methods are all of the Supporting Suggestions

For example:

Supporting Suggestions (支持暗示):

Hoping this can help you understanding more about Effective Hypnotic Suggestions.

How to Listen?

Hi,

No matter we are doing coaching, hypnotherapy, facilitation, managing or helping others, we need to listen.

There are so many books written on how to listen. There are so many listening skills out there. But do we need any of these skills?

The only way to listen is - Just Listen! Do nothing else, just listen to others. Then you can listen to far lots more information!

In listening, we are doing so many things like judging (what others said), planning (what to say next) and/or wondering around (where to lunch after listening to this boring guy), we are just not really listening.

Listening do not need any technique. Listening skills are B.S.. We have 2 ears and we are already given all the power of listening. It is just about whether we are listening or not!

Top 5 Tips: Top 5 Self-Suggestions I used to Make Myself Healthy, Physically & Mentally

Hi,

I use self-hypnosis everyday to train my mind and remind myself of what I really want. It takes me only 5 minutes a day. No matter it really works or not, it is just 5 minutes!

You do not need to know Self-Hypnosis to make use of these suggestions. You can use them as affirmations. Just talk to yourself anytime you want. Or even better, talk to yourself just before you sleep and after you wake up.

1. Everyday, in every way, I become better and better.

2. I can find more easier and better ways in any situation.

3. My mind is open and I can see any possibility.

4. I feel relaxed and I feel good.

5. I can treat myself better and better.

Hypnosis: Leading Suggestions (主觀引導暗示)

Hi,

Yesterday we were doing the 2nd attempt of Practice Assessment for last year's Certified Hypnotherapist Program. One of our graduate assistants raised a good question and I like to discuss here. I added some more questions to make understanding easier.

How to define a Leading Suggestion?

Any suggestion, which contains a message the client has never said can be leading. There is a danger of leading the client believing something which does not actually exist or misleading the client to a conclusion that is not the intention of him/her.

Then, can we use Leading Suggestions?

I would say NO under any circumstance. This is the basic code of ethics of hypnotherapist.

But can we use Leading Questions to help clients to improve?

I would also say No. This is just as bad, or even worse than Leading Suggestions. You embedded the suggestions into a question. This enhances its effectiveness in misleading!

How about using Leading Questions to help clients to discover more?

Tricky question. Our standard questions of "Because...?" and "That is....?" are leading questions. ("Because" implies there is a reason and "That is" implies there is an alternative description or definition) If we are taught to use them, that means we can use them?

Yes, but with caution. It is OK to use some of the Context Leading Questions, but absolutely NOT OK to use Content Leading Questions.

Context Leading Questions are leading questions without content. The 2 examples above is Context Leading Questions. You just give a structure for the clients to think. This makes discovery easier.

Content Leading Questions are leading question with content. For example: "Can you just forget about it?" The content is "forgetting something". You indirectly suggest the client to do or believe something that he/she never told you.

Conclusion?

Using Context Leading Questions to help clients to discover can be very effective. But if you are not sure about whether your questions are Context or Content Leading, don't use them. Using our 2 standard questions is more than enough in most cases.

Hypnosis: What is Hypnotherapy?

Hi,

Many people asked me the above question. If you like to read, you can always go to Hypnosis is about Change for more details.

Here is my briefest introduction of my understanding of hypnotherapy:

Hypnotherapy is NOT Psychotherapy. A hypnotherapist does NOT have the knowledge and skills to treat any psychological problems. A hypnotherapist is NOT a Medical Practitioner. A hypnotherapist does not know how to diagnose and treat physiological problems.

A responsible hypnotherapist only helps clients to improve themselves through adopting a better habit or behaviour.

A hypnotherapist put people in a very relaxed state. The process can be in form of relaxation and/or concentration. Then he/she can do 2 things to assist the clients to improve:

1. Tell to the clients what he/she wants to believe or act. For example, we can tell a dieting client to eat only 3 regular meals a day. Hypnotherapist call this Hypnotic Suggestion. When in this very relaxed state, people are less stubborn and are more willing to accept new ideas. This then makes Hypnotic Suggestions effective.

2. Ask clients non-leading questions to make the clients to think for solution of their problems. As mentioned above, people in this very relaxed state, they are less stubborn and are willing to search and consider new options.

So a hypnotherapist cannot do any miracle. The usefulness of hypnotherapy is also very limited. But if one's problem can be relieved through a new and better habit or behaviour, it might be useful.

Even under the above condition, hypnotherapy is not 100% effective. Some people can have really strong beliefs about his/her original behaviours. So, being a responsible hypnotherapist, we should advise his/her clients to seek other form of assistance when we find out that hypnotherapy is not effective to the clients.

Problemology - How to Describe a Problem?

Hi,

I've just finished the Ericksonian Therapy Program last week. I like the program very much because I am not doing what most others do - teaching language patterns, metaphors, story-telling and even hypnosis. I tried to model Erickson at a "near source-code" level, i.e. how he decided what/how to do and what are happening behind what he did. I will talk about this "near source-code" level in my future postings.

During the class, one of the participants asked me how to help a client to describe his/her problem. A good question and it is very important. So even I did not planned to cover that, I talked about it on that day.

Clients come to you to solve his problem (no matter it is a therapy, coaching, facilitation or consultation session). If he/she can't describe the problem as near to reality as possible, it adds problems to the problem! It makes problem solving more difficult.

We all need to understand the Content of a Problem before we can help to recover the missing parts in the clients' description.

The Content of a Problem might include:

1. The Background of the problem, i.e. Time, People, Place.
2. The Unwanted Behaviour(s).
3. The Unwanted Feeling(s).
4. The Desired Outcome(s).

Helping your clients to comprehensively describe their problems is helping yourself for a smooth process.

Hypnosis is about Changes Part 0: What is Hypnosis?

Hi,

Though I had already finished the Hypnosis is about Changes Series of articles, I find myself still missing some important parts. So, I add this introductory Part 0, and latter a more advanced Part 8!

Hypnosis comes from the Greek word, Hypnos, which means the "god of sleep". But it has nothing to do with sleep. Just like "Psychology" comes from "Study of the Soul" and Psychology is nothing about the soul! People under hypnosis looks like sleeping, so a British doctor, James Braid described it as Hypnosis in 1841.

I like to discuss with you my Top 10 most important basic questions about Hypnosis in this article.

Q1: What is Hypnosis?

Have you ever experienced after you drived to work, you can't remember any details of how you drive there? This is very common in everybody else. You are in a "Dissociated Mental State". You consciously focusing on your thought, while your Non-Conscious Thinking is doing something else. In the above example, your Conscious Mind might be thinking of the meeting that morning, and your Non-Conscious Thinking is doing the driving.

In "Dissociated Mental State", there are 2 different "thinkings" happening at the same time, your Conscious Thinking and your Non-Conscious Thinking. Someone is talking with you but you are thinking about (consciously focusing on) some other thing else. You can still "respond" to him/her by nodding or smiling at the "right" time. It is your Non-Conscious Thinking responding!

In it simplest form, hypnosis can be defined as putting people in one's "Dissociated Mental State" (or the Hypnotic State or the Trance) in order to talk to/with one's Non-Conscious Thinking.

Q2: What can Hypnosis helps?

When someone has a problem, he/she consciously thinks that he/she cannot change/solve the problem. For example, in quitting a drinking habit, he/she consciously thinks that he/she does not want to drink but he/she need to drink. Their Conscious Mind is stuck by the problem. However, it is the Non-Conscious Thinking "makes" him or her to drink. There is an urge inside that makes someone non-consciously go for a drink. Most of our problems are non-conscously or else we can easily change it consciously.

These non-conscious problems might be some Bad Habits like drinking, over-eating, etc. You drink or eat non-consciously. You are not even immediately aware of you are doing them. Or these problems can be some of our Personal "Weaknesses", like unable to find a girl-friend, poor memory or unable to concentrate, etc. You are not consciously not to find a girl-friend or consciously not to remember something. They are non-conscious.

Or the problems can be the results of some Psychosomatic Diseases, i.e. physical symptoms created by some psychological causes, like headache and stomachache caused by stress. You do not consciously create the pain by yourself when you are stressed. It is non-conscious. Only medical professionals can diagnose Psychosomatic Diseases. After you consulted your medical professionals who classified your problem as a Psychosomatic Disease, then hypnosis might be able to help.

Hypnosis can only be helpful with either Bad Habits, Personal "Weaknesses" or Psychosomatic Diseases.

Q3: Why talk to/with one's Non-Conscious Thinking might help him/her?

1. Talking to One's Non-Conscious Thinking.

As we do not consciously create the problem, talking to the Conscious Mind doesn't create results. The "problem" is not there. In hypnosis, we talk to the Non-Conscious Thinking to tell "it" that it do not need to drink and it can stop drinking. We call this kind of "telling" Hypnotic Suggestions.

Furthermore, in hypnosis, we do not need to persuade 2 "Minds", the Conscious and the Non-Conscious. We just persuade the Non-Conscious Part but not the Conscious Part. The Conscious Part thinks that "it" can't do without the drink. Persuading the Conscious Part is a waste of time as the client is already being persuaded by him/herself that he/she wants to quit but only that he/she is not able to do so. The Inability is at the Non-Conscious Part. So, we only need to persuade the Non-Conscious Part. This creates Efficiency.

As the Conscious Mind can only handle 1 thought at a time. (Try focusing on 2 things consciously at one single time. You can't do it!) It is the stubborn part of our mind. If "it" thinks he/she can't, he/she just can't do so.

However, our Non-Conscious Thinking can handle many things at the same time. Driving, typing, playing piano, etc actually must be done by the Non-Conscious Thinking. You need to handle so many things all at the same time! As the Non-Conscious Thinking can accomodate many thoughts simultanteously, "it" is easier to be persuaded. "It" is more flexible. "It" can think of many different options, scenorios, causes and effects all at the same time.

You can think the Conscious Part is a "Must"-Thinker. But the Non-Conscious Part is a "Might"-Thinker. Many things might be possible. In hypnosis, we are persuading the easier-to-be-persuaded Non-Conscious Part. This creates Effectiveness.

When we are talking to the Non-Conscious Mind, we are giving Suggestions to persuade "it".

2. Talking with One's Non-Conscious Thinking. We have all our knowledge, experience, and memories stored inside our Unconscious Mind. We are not consciously aware of all our knowledge, experience and memories consciously until we want to "use" some of them. Then, we recall from our Unconscious Mind into our Conscious Mind. Such "recall" is just like searching a very, very large-sized harddisk. It is not effective. The Conscious Mind can only search one item after another one item. So, we "forget" and can't recall everything.

A more effective way to recall is doing through our Non-Conscious Thinking. "It" can handle many thoughts at one time. Why can Google comes back with more results and much faster than other search engines? One of the reasons is that Google employs a lot of "robots" searching actively around the world wide web.

Recalling using Non-Conscious Thinking is just like searching the web by Google.

When our clients come to us for a problem, apart from just talking to their Non-Conscious Thinking through Hypnotic Suggestion in order to persuade "it", we also talk with the Non-Conscious Thinking. We talk with "it" to encourage "it" to search for the answers in the clients' Unconscious Mind. There are so many information in one's Unconscious Mind that might be useful in understanding the problem and providing possible solutions.

We just various Hypnoanalysis Techniques like Inner Guidance (IG), Inner Regression (IR), Inner Communication (IC), Inner Mediation (IM) to talk with the Non-Conscious Thinking to get information from the Unconscious Mind. We use IG to search general information about the problem. We use IR to search for the information related to the origins of the problem. IC is used to find the information about the people who are related to the problem and IM is used to search for the information about the clients' beliefs of the problems.

When the clients get enough information about their own problem, they understand it better. They might then be able to find solutions or they might see their problem differently.

So, we talk with the Non-Conscious Thinking to help others to discover more in order to persuade themselves.

Q4: Then how do we induce others into their "Dissociated Mental State" during hypnosis?

We do it by simply narrowing their attention (consciously focusing on) on something. We call this procedure Induction, in hypnosis. This Conscious Focus can be done physically or mentally by focusing on something visually or thinking of something respectively.

Q5: Then, what we do after the Induction?

Then we increase clients' focus to Deepen their "Dissociative Mental State". This makes talking to/with clients' Non-Conscious Thinking easier.

When clients are in this "Dissociative Mental State", we do the talking to/with Non-Conscious Thinking by either giving Hypnotic Suggestions or Hypnoanalysis Techniques. In either case, we will repeat the Hypnotic Suggestions for many, many times. (in the latter case, the Hypnotic Suggestions are the new understandings of the clients)

Why do we need to repeat the suggestions many, many times? Because we want to transform them into new Beliefs of the clients. We act according to our Beliefs. Our Beliefs produce Thoughts. Our Thoughts generate Actions, and our Actions create Results.

According to new Neuroscience Researches, when we think, we create connections of neurons into a Neurons Pattern. Each Neurons Pattern is a thought. Each time we think of that thought, we gradually make firing that Neurons Pattern easier and faster. When this is repeated for many times, the Neurons Pattern is so "strong" that whenever we think of anything related to that thought, we fire off that Neuron Pattern (consciously or non-consciously). This becomes our Belief.

It might take very long time for the client to repeat our suggestions to become his/her Belief, or he/she will never do so in daily life. We do it for him/her by repeating the suggestions during hypnosis.

The final step is Dehypnotization (or Awakening). We do this by suggesting clients to be gradually aware of all bodily senses and feelings so that they are not "focusing" on anything else.

Q6: Can Hypnosis be dangerous?

Of course very yes! We can give Dangerous Suggestions to our clients. If they accept our Dangerous Suggestions, the suggestions become their Beliefs. They might think and act dangerously!

Or when we talk with their Non-Conscious Thinking, we might mislead them. We can tell them something what we believed but these can be not useful or even dangerous to the clients. We might also mislead them to think about something which do not exist at all. We create their False Memories. These Fasle Memories can then be turned into False Beliefs. In turn these will mislead their thoughts and actions!

Q7: What is the right attitude for a Hypnotherapist?

Being a Media who facilitates the process of hypnosis. We do not have any answer to their problems. We only give Hypnotic Suggestions from the result of discussion with the clients before Induction. We do not advise anything.

When we talk with the Non-Conscious Thinking, we facilitate their own discoveries by themselves.

Q8: Can reciting some scripts or pre-prepared suggestions be useful?

In most of the case, it is not useful. We talk to/with clients but not reciting anything to them. The problem of client is unique to the client. For example, the same problem of finger biting can be totally different for different individuals.

Q9: Is Induction the most important part of doing Hypnosis?

Many people believe so, and therefore many people spend their time to learn different kinds of inductions. The truth is Induction is not the most important part. Everyone goes into natural "Dissociated Mental State" everyday. When you drive, type, read, watch movie, day-dream, etc, you are in different degree of this mental state.

This is so natural that we can go into this state easily.

The most important parts are how to Formulate Hypnotic Safe & Effective Suggestions and how to Facilitate the Discovery of the Non-Conscious Thinking. This is the purpose and core of hypnosis. Even though you can induce someone into Hypnotic State, it is useless if you can't help him/her solve his/her problems.

Q10: If Hypnosis is about bringing changes to clients' problems, what are the most important forces behind Chaages?

Why we do something? Because of Pleasure and/or Pain. It is either pleasurable to do it or painful of not doing it.

So we can stop doing something that causes the problem by reducing the Pleasure and/or increasing the Pain of doing this old action. And you can induce a new action by increasing the Pleasure and/or reducing the Pain of this new action.

We do this by Hypnotic Suggestions or by facilitating clients' own Discovery of these Pleasures and Pains.

Even the clients have successful installed their new Beliefs through hyonosis, they will or will not do the new actions. You can believe in many things but you might not do them all. We need motivations and motivations are the Pleasure and the Pain.

This article is written as an introduction to Hypnosis. Hoping this article can clarify some of the misunderstanding about hypnosis.

Hypnosis: Hypnosis is About Changes, Part 7 - 3 Levels of Mind Model

Hi,

We have several different hypnotic techniques taught in our Certified Hypnotherapist Program and Master Hypnotherapist Program. This article is written to clarify our 3 Levels of Mind Model, whcih is the fundamental concepts behind their applications.

For any psychosomatic disease and unwanted behaviours, there are always some causes behind.

For example, you have an Initial Sensitizing Event (ISE) of being cheated by your boy friend (or girl friend or whatever...). You develop a Mental Program (i.e. Belief or Beliefs System) of "Men are Bad and They must be Avoided" (Men = Bad -> Avoid). Some Subsequent Sensitizing Events (SSE) can be "attracted" to you. Since you have a Mental Program of "Men = Bad", you filtered off all the "good" men and/or good acts of men, thus you can just see all those bad men and bad acts of men. These reinforced your Mental Program of "Men = Bad -> Avoid"

This Mental Program becomes your Problem. We can't "see" our Problem because it is just a Mental Program or a Beliefs System, something being abstract and in our mind (Non-Conscious Mind). This Mental Program or Problem can then create various Symptoms that might annoy you. You might feel very lonely (since half of the population, i.e. men is being avoided). You might not be able to find a boy friend. You might find yourself always having problems with your bosses (many bosses are men, this still are quite true today). You might having not enough business (many clients are men), etc. These Symptoms can be so unrelated that it is difficult to tell that they all come from the same Problem.

Not all ISE can generate Problem. There must have some suitable Factor(s) of the Problem that creates a fostering condition for the Problem to emerge. Not all the Problems can generate Symptom(s), there must have some suitable Factor(s) of the Symptoms that creates a fostering condition for the Symptom to emerge.

So the ISE can have no effect on you for years but it starts to produce Problem all of a sudden because the Factor of the Problem kicks in. For the same reason, a Problem can generate different kinds of Symptoms at different time of your life, when different Factors of Symptoms appear.

Now, let's go back to our 3 Levels of Mind Model.

Level 1 Mind is the Conscious Level. You are aware of your "Problem", but that actually is the Symptom of your underlying Problem. As the Problem can create Symptoms that are so "unrelated", Your Level 1 Conscious Mind can't figure out that they are coming from the same Problem. Even though you are open enough to discuss your "problem" with your friends or therapists, you might just tell them just one of the Symptoms, or one Symptom to one person since your Level 1 Mind considers them as seperate issues.

When we do our Pre-Talk in hypnosis, it can be better to use a "Time" Oriented Approach, i.e. what happened also at and since the Symptom appeared, instead of a "Nature" Oriented Approach. The information get from this Level 1 Mind during Pre-Talk can be limited, but it forms the basis for our first set of Hypnotic Suggestion. This can be useful as they are pinpointing the Symptom or the intention of the client's visit. These suggestions, when effective, generate confidence, rapport, and thus support and cooperation from the client. This is just the Step 1 of our Therapeutic Intervention.

If there is a Symptom, there is always a Problem. If we can't remove the Problem, it can still generate some other Symptoms. Remember what we taught in class, a Problem has some Objectives. The Symptoms are its means to achieve its Objectives. In the above example, not getting a boy friend is the means to achieve the objective of avoiding the "bad" men. Apart from other Symptoms might be created, even though she can find a boy friend after your suggestions, she might get a "bad" boy friend and causes her troubles. It might harm more than help! (Systemic/Holistic Hypnotherapy Rule #1: First do no harm!)

So we go to our Step 2 by accessing the client's Level 2 Non-Conscious Mind. Most of our Beliefs are not conscious and so the Problem (which is a Mental Program or a Beliefs System) is not in the Level 1 Conscious Mind. We help the clients to be aware of their Problem by using the hypnotic skills of Inner Guide (IG), Inner Healer (IH) or Communicating with Disease (CD). All these skills do not go very deep. They are only capable in accessing into our Level 2 Non-Conscious Mind. We can also use our Master Hypnotherpaist skillset of Hypnotic Uncovering Technique (UT) in this level.

The Problem will be revealed in form of Advises from the IG or IH, or the Causes, Meanings and Objectives of Disease from the CD. When the Source of the Problem (ISE) is not very painful, it can be found in the Level 2 Mind, thus can also be revealed by IG, IH or CD. Most of the Problems can be solved in this Level 2 Mind.

When there is not much being revealed in this Level 2 Mind, or when there is negative emotions revealed here, we then go to our Step 3, Level 3 Non-Conscious Mind, which is a deeper part of our Non-Conscious Mind.

If the Problem is so repressed deep into a Non Conscious Mind, not much can be revealed in Level 2 IG, IH, CD or UT. When negative emotion is associated, the Problem will be repressed deeper as a protective mechanism according to Freud. We just can't live with the negative emotions in our daily lives.

To access the Source of these kinds of Problems in the Level 3 Mind, we use the hypnotic Skills of Inner Regression (IR), Age Regression (AR) or ES Therapy (ES) when no negative emotion is indicated. But we can also apply IR or AR, Inner Communciation (IC) or Forgiveness Therapy (FT), Inner Mediation (IM) or ES according to the types of negative emotion revealed in Level 2 Mind.

When the Source is being revealed, reviewed, and re-understand, the effects of the Source are dissolved and the Mental Program (Beliefs) of the Problem is restructured. The Problem is thus cleared. When the Problem does not exist, all its related Symptoms disappear.

Sometimes, we can't do anything with the Problem and/or the Source, or we are not successful even employing all our skills (this is a fact of life - we have limits), what we can do is either altering the Factors of the Problem or the Symptoms using hypnosis or physically by the clients, or to lower the effects of the Symptoms.

For example, in the above example, the client can change her field into selling female products or find a female boss. This alters the Factors. In case of Psychosomatic Diseases, we can use the hypnotic skills of Golden SunRay (GS) or Colour Healing (CH) to lower the effects of the Symptoms, like pains.

This concludes my final article in this series. The whole series of articles outlined our SOBER System of non-invasive Hypnotherapy. Hoping they create more clarity to our participants of the program.

Thanks again for your support to these articles and to the programs.

Hypnosis: Applying Family Constallation in Inner Mediation

Hi,

Yesterday during Practice Group of Certified Hypnotherapist Program, I demonstrated a "new" way of doing Inner Mediation. I employed some ideas of Family Constellation in the Inner Mediation Process.

Many years ago, when I first came across Family Constellation, I found this skill can be very useful. However, what I saw was when someone was getting better, those who helped him/her might pick up emotions. "Is this necessary?" was the question in my mind.

I discussed with my fellow classmates and introduced them the Inner Mediation Process. I thought that we can apply Family Constellation into Inner Mediation and unnecessary emotions can be avoided.

People are not playing the family members' roles (where emotions are built in there), but the roles of client's inner personalities. From my point of view, those family members' roles are also the client's inner personalities, what he/she thinks/believes about his/her family members.

Not being played as family members, people will not take up those unnecessary emotions. (I do know that some people are quite addicted to help in the Family Constellation Process, because there is emotional release. The emotional release can help them to relieve their own internal stress. But since there is no learning gained, the internal stress and emotions can accumulate again. This can be very additive!)

A simplified version of this Inner Mediation Process is as below for your interest. I am not encourage you to try by yourself without proper training. My goal of this article is to discuss an alternative form of emotion-less process.

1. Do the same procedure of pretalk and pre-suggestions of the Inner Mediation Process to the client, but without hynotizing him/her.

2. Ask for the shape and size of the meeting table. Then ask for the number of seats as in Inner Mediation.

3. Request client to visualize the meeting table and seats in the physical space.

4. Then continue with the appearance of meeting participants. Ask the client to find the most suitable people around him/her (helpers) who could represent these inner personalities.

5. Mediate the meeting as in the Inner Mediation Process. Facilitate oponion gathering and mutual agreements.

6. Request for positive messages and learning from the client and then all other participants.

7. Repeat the positive messages and learning to them as suggestions.

BTW, I like to clarify that I am not saying Family Constellation is no good. They are great. I am just borrowing some of their concepts into this waking hypnosis process.

Rules of a Therapist

Hi,

I am right now in Thailand, studing some traditional Thai therapies. I study these because I wish to learn something different from what I had learned before, and something I don't really need. This might give me some new insights in other areas.

Something I found really interesting and impressive is about their attitude being a therapist.

They strongly emphaize the rules of a therapist in the program. These rules are simple and basic stuff. They are really good guidelines not just for a therapist, but for anyone else. Here are the rules:

1. Study Diligently.

2. Do not hope for any Gain.

3. Do not take Clients from other therapists.

4. Do not Boast about your knowledge.

5. Ask for Advices and Listen to people who know better than you.

6. Give thanks everyday to your Teachers.

Hypnosis: Hypnosis is About Changes - Part 1-6

Hi,

Many people tell me that they can't find all the 6 articles of the Hypnosis is about Changes series. So I consolidate all 6 here again.

I had re-written some of the content, adding new information and correcting some typos. I hope that it can be more readable.

I. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is About Changes Part 1 – Source, Problem(s), Symptom(s) & Factor(s)

Hi,

I seldom write about hypnosis. So I decide to write several short articles about my concepts of hypnotherapy. This is Part 1 of the series.

Hypnosis is about changes. We want to change because we do not satisfy with something about ourselves. It can be a bad habit, an addiction, a weakness, or a psychosomatic disease. It is something we don't want, consciously. But we just can't get rid of it because there can be some sub-conscious reasons, Source and/or Factors.

A Source is something happened in the past that caused your "Problem". There must a cause to everything. This is simple logic. Factors are something that creates the condition for your "Problem" and/or your Symptoms. You can change your "Problem" by working on your Source and/or your Factors.

One thing you must bear in mind that your bad habit, an addiction, a weakness, or a psychosomatic disease is NOT your "Problem". It is just the Symptom or one of the Symptoms of your "Problem". Your "Problem" is that something behind the Symptoms. For example, people have an addiction to alcohol can be just a Symptom of feeling stressed (i.e. the "Problem"). If we just remove the Symptom, some other Symptom can appear (or the same Symptom reappears later, i.e. Relapse!) as the "Problem" is still there.

To summarize:

Source >Problem(s) > Symptom(s)
----------------------------
---------- Factor(s)------Factor(s)

To successfully change, we can work on the Source, the Factors, and/or the "Problem" itself. Well-trained Hypnotherapists work on either of these. (I am talking about working on the "Problem", not removing it. If you remove the "Problem", the Source will just create another "Problem". I will talk about it in greater details in later articles)

Amongst these, the most difficult part is the Problem. The Symptoms, the Source and the Factors are more concrete in nature, while the Problem is abstract. Most people do not know what is the Problem they are facing.

Keith

II. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 2 - Symptoms

Hi,

This is Part 2 of my series of Hypnosis is about Changes.

As mentioned in Part 1, hypnotherapist facilitating changes can be done at the Source/Factors, Problem(s) or the Symptoms Levels. The easiest is the Symptoms Level. We do it by giving Post-Hypnotic Suggestions.

The problem using suggestions is it seldom really works.

When the symptoms are being removed by suggestions and the "Problem(s)" still exist, it can simply generate another symptom or the same symptom later. But this can be effective under either of these two conditions:

1. You identified the true Motivation for the change needed and the Motivation is big enough.

2. The Symptom is just one of the many ways that can "Stabilize" the "Problem". It is NOT the Only and/or Key way to do so. The Problem is still stable even without this symptom.

For Condition 1, true motivation can seldom be identified in Conscious Mind (when client is awake). They are usually buried in the Subconscious Mind. To be effective, we use the motivations found in both minds to persuade both the conscious and the subconscious minds. We get such information of the conscious mind during Pre-talk, particularly when we can relate the changes required to client's needs and/or wants. We can identify the motivation of the subconscious mind using techniques like, Inner Guide, Inner Healer, Communicate with the Disease Entity, Hypno-Analysis, Motivation Mapping, Hypnotic Uncovering Technique and the ES Therapy.

You can do nothing about Condition 2. Condition 1 is a matter of skills while Condition 2 is a matter of Luck!

Motivation is the key to effective hypnotic suggestions. So, we formulate our Main Suggestion using the format of "Changes because Motivation".

When you can't help the clients to improve at the "Symptom(s) Level", go to the higher (or earlier) levels. The higher levels can be more effective, but need greater skills and might involve more pains to the clients!

I will talk more about the "Source Level" in Part 3.

Keith

III. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 3 - Source

Hi,

This is Part 3 of my article series of "Hypnosis is about Changes".

As mentioned in Part 1, hypnotherapist facilitating changes can be done at the Source/Factors, Problem(s) or the Symptoms Levels. I talked about the Symptoms Level in Part 2. It is easiest at the Symptoms Level. We do it by giving Post-Hypnotic Suggestions. But the problem is it seldom really works!

In this Part 3, I am going to talk about the Source Level.

Every Problem has an ultimate cause, which can be physical, psychological or emotional. We cannot do much about the cause if it is physical and psychological. It is the job of medical doctors or clinical psychologists respectively. Being a hypnotherapist, we can work on emotional causes.

There can be a lot of causes for a problem. The best leverage is to work on the ultimate cause, or the original cause - the "Source" of the problem. So, this level is better called the "Source Level" to reduce misunderstandings.

The "Source" can be happened years ago, or just in last week. The "Source" can be some bad experiences in the past. When the "Source" is settled, the problem is then resolved automatically.

We can use all kinds of Regression Therapy, like Inner Regression (in Certified Hypnotherapist Level) or Age Regression (in Master Hypnotherapist Level). We assist the client to go back to the time of the "Source", re-view it and re-understand it. It is the new understandings that heal! Regression Therapy can be a painful, but fruitful process. If you are not well-trained for it, keep away from it! One can hurt the client even more by mis-using these advanced skills.

When clients get new understanding about the "Source", they changed the "old" beliefs related to the "Source" and then to the "Problem". Our old beliefs must be replaced with new beliefs before changes can be taken place. We cannot "not" believe/do something old, we must believe/do something new instead! So we always ask our clients for positive messages, new learning or understandings upon completion of the regression therapy.
Skillful hypnotherapists will convert these positive messages, new learning and understandings into Post-Hypnotic Suggestions.

Why clients can always get positive messages, new learning and understandings after successful regression therapy? It is because there are some critical elements in any good regression therapies:

1. Clients re-experience the whole thing again. They release the repressed emotions so that they can "see" the experience clearer.

2. Clients have the chance to "dissociated" from him/herself during the process, so that they can "see" the experience in a more objective, detached perspective.

3. Clients can "see" what happened before, during and after the experience again. They have the time to "see" what they had missed when it happened in the past.

4. Clients can "go" into the minds of the related other people (Inner Personalities inside the clients). This makes clients not only understand better the case, but the thinking of related people (thinking of clients' Inner Personalities, thus gaining fuller understanding of him/herself.

5. Therapists have a systematic process to request the clients for the positive messages, new learning and understandings. This process assists clients for a better understanding.

Inner Communication is another tool for the "Source" Level. This enables the clients to finish the "unfinished" business with someone else (again, Inner Personalities of the clients) in the past. This process works when the "Source" is an unfinished business. Of course, when you still angry with someone after years, this is an unfinished business.

I will discuss with you the "Factors Level" in Part 4 of this series later.

Keith

IV. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 4 - Factors

Hi,

This is Part 4 of my article series of "Hypnosis is about Changes".

To recap what we had discussed in the last 3 parts:

Source > Problems/Factors > Symptoms/Factors

Every Problem the client facing might have a Source, the initial origin. It can be some unpleasant past experience. The Problem can then produce various Symptoms.

In this Part 4, I am going to talk about the Factors Element.

The Factors are conditions that support the Problem and/or the Symptoms. It can be internal or external. The External Factors are the conditions for the Problem or the Symptoms. The Internal Factors are beliefs that support the Problem or the Symptoms. The more intense are the Factors, the more serious can the Problem/Symptoms be.

If we can't work on the Source due to whatever reasons, we can "attack" the Factors. We, hypnotherapists, can help our clients either by making our clients aware of the Factors so that they can do something about them, or by reducing the intensity of their internal factors, or by lowering their reactions to the external factors, or by cutting off the links between the Factors and the Problem.

Usually by doing so, we can reduce the seriousness of the Problem/Symptoms, or sometimes we can eliminate the Problem as the conditions (Factors) are not strong enough to support the Problem any more.

We can help our clients to identify the Factors through the use of Inner Guidance, Inner Healer, Communicating with the Disease Entity, Hypnotic Uncovering Technique, and the Systemic Hypnotherapy. Of course, an experienced hypnotherapist can obtain a lot of “Factors” information during the Pre-talk, too.

In our Part 5 of the series, we will discuss the Belief Element of the Problem.

Keith

V. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 5 - Beliefs

Hi,

This is the Part 5 of the article series of "Hypnosis is about Changes".

To recap what we had discussed in the last 4 parts:

Source > Problems/Factors > Symptoms/Factors

This is not the full picture yet. The Source cannot directly produce the Problem. For example, a boy who was frightened by his teacher cannot make him having fear with his boss. The former can be the Source of the latter. But there is a missing link between them. It can be something like this:

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms/Factors

The Source subconsciously induced a/some beliefs, which indirectly lead to the Problem. The boy, after being frightened by his teacher, can believe that all people senior than him can be threatening. This Belief causes the fear. He then might fear his father, his boss, his clients or older colleagues.

This opens up another door for hypnotherapists to work on the Problem. We can identify the Belief behind clients' Problem. When they shifted their Beliefs, they improve their Problems.

We can use hypnotic techniques like Inner Guidance, Inner Healer, Communicating with the Disease Entity, Hypnotic Uncovering Technique, or Ego States Therapy to identify the Meaning of the Illness or Problem. When the Meaning and/or Belief is exposed, if it is irrational, the clients can then gain understanding and learning.

Some simple NLP skills, like Limiting Belief Elicitation can also be used during Pre-talk or in hypnotic state to uncover the underlying beliefs.

I also recommend the use of Mental Symbology to map the concept of clients' beliefs. This is of great leverage as it helps the clients to discover their operating concepts governing their beliefs.

We will talk about the last Element, Resultant, in our Part 6.

Keith

VI. Hypnosis: Hypnosis is about Changes Part 6 - Resultant

Hi,

This is the Part 6, the final part of the article series of "Hypnosis is about Changes".

To recap what we had discussed in the last 5 parts:

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms/Factors

This model reflects 5 locations we hypnotherapists can work on with our clients. This enhances our flexibility. But the picture is not yet completed. Here is the 6th element.

Source > Beliefs > Problems/Factors > Symptoms/Factors > Results

Clients come to you sometimes due to the Symptoms, and sometimes due to the Results. They might be asking for help on their red face when meeting the opposite sexes, or they might be requesting for help in their difficulties in having a boy/girl friend. The former is the Symptoms while the latter is the Results.

We can help the client to change the results without changing any of the previous 5 elements. He can still having red face when meeting girls, but he can be able to talk with them even with a red face.

When we can't do anything with all the 5 other elements due to whatever reasons, we can add/remove/change some other behaviour to achieve an alternative but improved result. We can do this by Hypnotic Suggestions, Inner Guidance, Inner Mediation or Ego States Therapy. The original problem still exists, but the client gets a better result. But it can be best done through Systemic Hypnotherapy. (to be discussed in our Master Hypnotherapist Program)

When I was dealing with very old-aged clients, or when the pain from the Source was too great for him/her to touch on his/her Source, Beliefs, Problems, or the Source and/or the Belief was too repressed that we can uncover nothing, I will just handle his/her Results.

This is the final part of this series, and I hope you can get a fuller picture on hypnotherapeutic intervention.

I plan to start another series on blind-spots. Hope you can find it useful too.

Hypnosis: The Law of Unanticipated Results

Hi,

In yesterday's Certified Hypnotherapist Program, I mentioned the Law of Unanticipated Results to the class. I introduced this concept as a guideline for doing the Inner Mediation Process.

"You cannot assume that you know how events are going to roll out, what each party wants and needs, and how they react. Always expect the unexpected."

This applies equally well to all our SOBER (Transformative) Hypnotherapy Processes, i.e. Inner Regression, Inner Communication, and Inner Guidance.

If you don't assume, you will not lead and suggest subjectively This makes all the processes much safer and ecological.

The Law of Unanticipated Results is also great for coaching, too.

Hypnosis: What is the Use of Pre-Talk in Hypnotherapy?

Hi,

Someone asked me a question about Hypnotherapy today.

If we should not do any diagnosis, what is the function of Pre-Talk?

Yes, we should not doing any diagnosis. This is the work of medical doctors/clinical psychologist and other professionals. It is dangerous and misleading to clients as we do not have the right kind of training to do diagnosis.

But we do analysis with the clients. We assist the clients to analyse his/her own situation so that they can be clearer about themeselves and their problems.

So, we ask questions to help them to understand.

Medical doctors ask and answer questions.

(Source)

Hypnosis: Transference

Hi,

Transference is a problem faced by all helping professionals. This problem might not caused by you, but you can still be affected. No matter you are a therapist, coach, counsellor, trainer or even a manager.

If you don't understand this problem, you might find yourself confused or annoyed.

Your clients might project some positive qualities (you might not have them) onto you. This makes them thinking you are great. They like you or even love you. This is the Positive Transference. It seems good but all his/her perceptions about you are based on false assumptions. Sooner or later, they might "discover" the "truth" and then he/she might turn against you. He/she might attack you as they think you had cheated them, though you have done nothing all from the beginning. Your clients might even shifted into another form of Transference, the Negative Transference.

The Negative Transference is the opposite of the Positive Transference. They might project some negative qualities (again you might not have them) onto you. This makes them thinking you are bad, really bad.

You cannot do much about Transference. One of the precautions is to keep professional distance with your clients. But transference can still happen even though you take your precaution.

Just don't be happy too soon when you find your clients "like" you or don't be too upsetted when they "hate" you!
